Pune Style vs Standard Nursery Pots: What's the Difference?

"Pune style" is a term used widely in South India's nursery trade. We explain the structural differences, why the shape matters for stacking, drainage, and root health.

What Is a "Pune Style" Nursery Pot?

If you've sourced nursery pots in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, or Maharashtra, you've likely heard the term "Pune pot" or "Pune style pot." But what exactly does it mean — and how does it differ from a standard pot of the same nominal size?

The term originated in Pune, Maharashtra, where a particular pot profile became popular with commercial nurseries and eventually spread across South India's wholesale trade. Today, "Pune style" refers to a specific combination of proportions, rim profile, and base design that differs measurably from what we call the "standard" or "plain" pot.

In practical terms: a "6 inch Pune pot" and a "6 inch standard pot" may have the same top diameter but differ meaningfully in depth, wall angle, rim design, and base profile. These differences have real consequences for plant health and nursery operations.

The Key Structural Differences

1. Depth-to-Diameter Ratio

Pune style pots are typically deeper relative to their top diameter — often with a depth:diameter ratio of approximately 0.85–0.95:1. This gives them more volume per nominal size than a standard pot.

Standard pots are shallower relative to their top diameter — typically 0.70–0.80:1 ratio. They're wider and flatter, with a lower centre of gravity.

2. Wall Taper Angle

Pune style pots generally have a more pronounced inward taper from top to base. This steeper angle affects:

  • How many pots fit on a pallet (greater vertical nesting)
  • The ratio of top surface area (where light and water enter) to base area
  • The tendency of the pot to remain stable on uneven ground

Standard pots typically have a gentler taper — the top and bottom diameters are more similar, making the pot more cylindrical in profile.

3. Rim Design

Many Pune style pots feature a rolled or flanged rim at the top opening. This rim serves multiple functions:

  • Makes it easier to grip and lift a fully planted pot
  • Adds structural stiffness to the top of the pot
  • Creates a visual "finished" look preferred for retail display
  • Allows the pot to hang over the edge of bench or display table (particularly useful in garden centres)

Standard pots (also called "without collar" in South Indian trade) lack this flange. The top opening is simply the raw rim of the tapered wall. These stack more compactly and are preferred for bulk nursery operations where storage density matters.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Pune Style Pot

  • Deeper relative to diameter
  • More pronounced wall taper
  • Rolled/flanged rim
  • More volume per size
  • Better for retail display
  • Greater root depth for taproot plants
  • Slightly higher production cost

Standard / Without Collar Pot

  • Shallower relative to diameter
  • Gentler wall taper
  • Plain rim (no collar)
  • More compact stacking
  • Better for bulk nursery storage
  • Lower centre of gravity — more stable
  • Lower cost per unit

Does It Matter for Plant Health?

Yes — the depth difference has a real effect on certain plant types.

Plants That Benefit from the Deeper Pune Style

  • Taproot plants — Carrot, beetroot, and herbs like parsley develop a main central root that needs depth
  • Trees and large shrubs — Deeper pots accommodate the initial taproot development before field planting
  • Banana and palm species — Fibrous but deep root systems benefit from extra depth

Plants Where Standard Depth Is Sufficient

  • Shallow-rooted annuals — Marigold, petunia, vinca, and most bedding plants don't need deep pots
  • Succulents and cacti — Prefer wider, shallower containers
  • Propagation stages — Seedlings and cuttings don't yet have deep root systems
